THE NORTHERN Cape MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Bentley Vass, is this week leading a series of housing handovers to beneficiaries across the Namakwa and Pixley ka Seme districts — part of the province’s drive to restore dignity through quality human settlements.

Vass will be joined by district and local mayors, councillors, community leaders, and elated beneficiaries.

The programme kicks off at 10am on Tuesday, July 8, in Calvinia, where the MEC will hand over some of the completed units from the Calvinia 200 Housing Project, under the Hantam Local Municipality in the Namakwa District.

The project, part of the province’s R1 billion housing initiative, is expected to deliver 200 houses to local beneficiaries once completed.

According to the department, construction is ongoing, and the remaining units will be handed over upon completion.

Two additional handover events are scheduled for Wednesday, July 9, in the Pixley ka Seme District, as part of the province’s Integrated Residential Development Programme (IRDP).

At 10.30am, Vass will be in De Aar to hand over homes as part of the De Aar 2386 Housing Project under the Emthanjeni Local Municipality.

He will then travel to Ouboks in the Umsobomvu Local Municipality, where homes are set to be handed over at 1pm as part of the Ouboks 50 Housing Project.

The department highlighted the handovers as part of its ongoing efforts to address the housing backlog in rural and semi-urban areas across the Northern Cape.
