As part of its ongoing efforts to prevent and reduce incidents of burglary, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued essential safety tips for residents and business owners to protect their properties.

Despite visible policing and emergency response, burglary remains a priority concern in the province. To combat this, SAPS is urging the public to take proactive measures to secure their properties and stay safe.

Safety tips during a burglary:

  • Remain calm and think clearly
  • Avoid confronting the burglar(s) directly
  • Find a safe place to hide and stay there until the situation is resolved

After a burglary:

  • Report the incident to the police immediately
  • Preserve evidence by avoiding touching or disturbing potential evidence
  • Secure your property to prevent further incidents
  • Have emergency numbers readily available

To prevent burglaries, it's essential to take proactive measures to secure your property. Installing security systems such as alarms and CCTV cameras can deter potential burglars.

Ensure doors and windows are fitted with burglar bars or doors and are locked to prevent unauthorised entry. Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings, reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.

Additionally, consider requesting neighbours to keep an eye on your property, especially during extended absences like school holidays. Other effective measures include not opening doors or gates for strangers, not keeping large amounts of money or valuable items in plain sight, and securing bicycles, hose pipes, and other attractive items. Getting a watchdog, keeping cars locked, and knowing your neighbours can also help.

Finally, thoroughly vet anyone before employing them or granting access to your property to minimise the risk of burglary.

By following these safety tips and taking responsibility for their security, residents and business owners can minimise the risk of burglary and ensure a swift response in case of an emergency.

The SAPS encourages the public to contact their local police station or the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 to report any suspicious activity or seek assistance.
