These days South Africans tend to sit around complaining that crime is getting out of hand, and not enough is being done to address the problem of rampant and rising unlawful activity.
However, we can be glad that those tasked with combatting crime are not simply sitting back and allowing things to snowball.
In fact, late last week, the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, joined Operation Shanela in the ZF Mgcawu District.
The operation was conducted under the operational command of Major General Monica Sebili, and was carried out within the greater Upington area on Friday, June 27.
The operation targeted illicit activities such as drug trafficking and violent crimes, commenced with a roadblock along with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) at the Upington Weigh Bridge.
Routine searches were conducted on 111 vehicles and 302 persons. Additionally, to spread the anti-crime message, crime awareness pamphlets were distributed by the CPF and Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison participants.
Furthermore, drugs and illegal liquor outlet raids were conducted at four premises in the Paballelo and Rosedale area, where liquor worth R5,743.75 was confiscated.
The operation continued with the members continuing with high visibility patrols in the CBD area, addressing all illicit activities in hot spot areas.
