While Kimberley residents are in the midst of gripping ice-cold temperatures, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has urged residents to take necessary safety precautions during the cold winter months, including fire safety measures at home and road safety tips for when they are driving in inclement weather.
According to the weather forecast, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, especially at night, with some areas potentially experiencing sub-zero temperatures.
Residents are being advised to take steps to stay warm and safe.

To prevent fires, it's essential to keep matches, lighters, and flammable liquids out of children's reach. Additionally, never smoke in bed; instead, smoke outside and dispose of cigarette butts properly.
In terms of emergency preparedness, plan and practice your fire escape drill at least twice a year. Display emergency phone numbers in your house and know what to do in case of a fire: get out, stay out, and call for help.
Some additional tips to keep in mind include using portable air conditioners safely and knowing how to react if your clothing catches fire – stop, drop, and roll. If a fire occurs, only attempt to extinguish it if it's safe to do so; otherwise, leave it to the professionals.
Motorists are also being warned to exercise caution on the roads, as icy conditions and reduced visibility may lead to hazardous driving conditions.
Stay informed, stay warm, and stay safe.
The SAPS emphasises that "Your safety is our Priority" and encourages residents to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the winter months.
