A NORTHERN Cape-registered truck has landed its driver in hot water after he allegedly attempted to bribe a traffic officer on the N10 in the Eastern Cape.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the truck, which was pulled over just outside Cookhouse, was reportedly in shocking condition — with a loose steering rack, hazardous cabin wiring, and worn-out tyres — making it a potential death trap on wheels.
When confronted with the violations, the driver allegedly offered the traffic officer a R1,500 bribe in an attempt to avoid penalties. However, the young female officer stood her ground — not only rejecting the bribe but also arresting the driver on the spot. Her actions have earned widespread praise for integrity and courage.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha hailed the officer’s actions as “an act of bravery and absolute patriotism,” saying she put public safety above personal gain.
The N10, a major route that links the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape, has become notorious for truck-related crashes. Authorities warn that vehicles in poor condition like this one contribute to deadly accidents and prolonged road closures that affect travel and trade between provinces.
Authorities say the incident serves as a clear warning to long-haul drivers, particularly those crossing provincial borders: corruption will not be tolerated, and roadworthiness is non-negotiable.
