THE South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kimberley is warning residents to be cautious when purchasing goods online, particularly furniture, after a surge in reports of a new scam targeting unsuspecting victims.

The scam involves fake advertisements on social media platforms, notably Facebook Marketplace, where scammers lure victims into paying deposits for furniture that does not exist or is not in the condition advertised. Once payment is made, the collection address provided turns out to be fake, leaving the victim out of pocket.

The SAPS has registered numerous fraud cases and is urging the public to verify the legitimacy of sellers and platforms before making any payment. Detective Sergeant Tapsey Matebesi can be contacted at 072 781 9152 with any information regarding this scam. Suspicious activities can also be reported via the MySAPS App or by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Useful tips to avoid Facebook Marketplace scams:

  1. Verify the seller: Check the seller's profile, ratings, and reviews to ensure they are legitimate. Be cautious of profiles with little to no activity or reviews.
  2. Be wary of too-good-to-be-true deals: If the price is significantly lower than similar items, it may be a scam.
  3. Meet in a safe location: Choose a public place to meet the seller, and consider bringing a friend or family member.
  4. Inspect the item before paying: Don't pay without checking the item's condition.
  5. Use secure payment methods: Avoid paying via wire transfer or gift cards. Instead, use secure payment methods such as PayPal or credit cards.
  6. Watch for red flags: Be cautious of sellers who:
  •     Pressure you to pay quickly.
  •     Refuse to meet in person.
  •     Ask for payment via unusual methods.

Also, when shopping online, it's crucial to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Facebook or local authorities if something seems off. Always read reviews and check ratings to ensure you're dealing with reputable sellers who have good ratings and reviews. Never send money without verifying the item and the seller's legitimacy. Trust your instincts and stay alert – if a transaction feels off, it's better to prioritise caution and avoid potential scams.

By following these tips, you can reduce your chances of falling victim to Facebook Marketplace scams.

The SAPS emphasises the importance of being vigilant when shopping online and advises the public to exercise extreme caution to avoid falling victim to such scams.
