THE South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kimberley is warning residents to be cautious when purchasing goods online, particularly furniture, after a surge in reports of a new scam targeting unsuspecting victims.
The scam involves fake advertisements on social media platforms, notably Facebook Marketplace, where scammers lure victims into paying deposits for furniture that does not exist or is not in the condition advertised. Once payment is made, the collection address provided turns out to be fake, leaving the victim out of pocket.
The SAPS has registered numerous fraud cases and is urging the public to verify the legitimacy of sellers and platforms before making any payment. Detective Sergeant Tapsey Matebesi can be contacted at 072 781 9152 with any information regarding this scam. Suspicious activities can also be reported via the MySAPS App or by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
