Five suspects, aged 27-42, were arrested for extortion after allegedly threatening a mine worker and demanding money at a Postmasburg mine.

A SWIFT and coordinated response by the Northern Cape’s Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (OCI) unit led to the arrest of five suspects, aged between 27 and 42, on charges of extortion following an incident in Postmasburg.
The suspects allegedly forced their way onto a local mine’s premises on Monday, June 16, 2025, at around 7.30am. According to police reports, they threatened the complainant, demanded money, and took the keys to several excavators.
Acting on intelligence, the OCI team tracked down and arrested all five suspects shortly after the incident.
The accused appeared briefly in the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, June 18. The case was postponed to June 24 for a formal bail application.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended the officers involved for their quick response and professionalism. She warned that extortion and intimidation would not be tolerated, adding that those responsible will be held accountable.
