THE NORTHERN Cape provincial government will mark Youth Day 2025 with a commemorative event in Roodepan, Kimberley, honouring the spirit of the 1976 youth uprising and the continuing role of young people in shaping both the province and the country’s future.
The official provincial event will take place on Monday, June 16, at Lucretia Primary School, with Premier Dr Zamani Saul delivering the keynote address. The day forms part of a broader Youth Month programme under the theme: “Skills for the Changing World: Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation” and the tagline “Gear Up for Greatness”.
The theme highlights the importance of equipping young people with the education and skills they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy and play a meaningful role in society.
In the build-up to Youth Day, the province will host a variety of sporting and cultural events aimed at fostering social cohesion and nation-building, especially among the youth.
Government departments, including Sassa and the Department of Home Affairs, will also be present on the day to provide essential services to the community.
Youth Month is commemorated annually to honour the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 and to reflect on the challenges still facing today’s generation - particularly around education, employment, and social inclusion.
