AS THE long weekend approaches, many Northern Capers are looking forward to unwinding and having a good time. However, with increased social gatherings and celebrations comes the risk of contact crimes.

The SAPS in the Northern Cape is urging the public to enjoy themselves responsibly while staying alert to prevent falling victim to these crimes.

The SAPS has provided valuable safety tips to help you stay safe during the long weekend

Top safety tips to prevent contact crimes:

  1. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings
  2. Travel with friends and use the buddy system
  3. Avoid walking alone in secluded areas and stay in well-lit spots
  4. Don't flash valuable times and keep your belongings secure
  5. Trust your instincts and get help if you feel uncomfortable
  6. Drink responsibly and keep an eye on your drinks
  7. Don't intervene in fights; call the police instead

By following these safety tips and staying alert, you can enjoy the long weekend responsibly and safely.

Additionally, the SAPS advises:

  • If you're a victim, get help immediately and make as noise as possible to alert someone to help you
  • Don't shower or change your clothes if you've been attacked, it may destroy evidence
  • Give the police all the details you have about the area and the suspect
  • If your keys are taken, stolen or lost, change your locks
  • If you find yourself in a dangerous situation, contact your nearest police station or call 0860010111.
