MAY 31 marked three years since Le-Virno van Wyk, who was five years old at the time, went missing in Upington.

Despite extensive searches by the police and community members, which included farms, swamps, and dumping sites, no trace of him has been found. Van Wyk, who was in Grade R at Intermediêre Louisvaleweg school, disappeared on May 31, 2022.

He was last seen playing with friends near a railway line in the Skierlik squatter camp area after visiting his uncle's home and leaving his bag and jacket behind.

The police are still investigating the case with regular consultation with the family. At this point, there are no further leads or information that can assist in the conclusion of this case.

The public is requested to assist with information by contacting the branch commander, Captain Thabiso Mashilishili, on 082 302 0442 or the investigating officer, Sergeant Lebogang Mokwene, on 082 330 4478. All information will be treated with the strictest of confidence.

The investigation continues.

According to the South African Police Service Missing Persons Bureau, a child goes missing every five hours in South Africa, which translates to approximately 1,697 children per year nationwide. About 23% of these children remain unlocated, which is around 390 children annually.

The SAPS emphasises the importance of swift action when a person goes missing.

6. Update the SAPS if the person is found: If the missing person returns or is found, inform the investigating officer and complete a SAPS 92 form to remove the report from circulation.
