A 21-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested and appeared in court after the brutal killing of his girlfriend, a 19-year-old student whose body was discovered in the veld near Colesberg.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the victim, Bunono Alulutho Buba, was found with stab wounds to her neck and abdomen in the early hours of Thursday, June 5. Her body was discovered in the veld between Bongweni and Khayelitsha in Kuyasa, Colesberg, after a chilling turn of events led police to the scene.

Authorities were initially alerted to a reported altercation at a local drinking spot in Khayelitsha at around 2.25am. But when officers arrived at the scene, no one was found. They proceeded to Manne Dipico Hospital to check if anyone had been admitted for medical treatment - only to be approached by a driver in a Volkswagen Golf.

The man behind the wheel, later identified as Siphosovuyo Yabo, reportedly directed officers to the spot where Buba’s lifeless body was found.

Yabo was arrested and has since made a brief appearance in the Colesberg Magistrate’s Court. His case has been postponed to June 19, and he remains in custody.

The police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist the investigation. Anyone with details is encouraged to contact Constable Gorra on 074 378 8229, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app. All information will be handled in the strictest confidence.
