AN AMBULANCE was involved in an accident near Brandvlei on June 4, prompting an internal investigation by the Northern Cape Department of Health.
According to the department, the crash occurred at around 5.49pm on the R27-9 route between Brandvlei and Calvinia, roughly two kilometres outside Brandvlei. The emergency vehicle was en route to an inter-facility patient transfer.
A spokesperson for the MEC for Health, Mandisa Mereeotlhe, said emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, and no serious injuries were reported. However, as a precaution, all involved are undergoing further medical assessments.
A preliminary internal investigation is now under way to determine what caused the accident. The department said it would be looking closely at compliance with transport and safety protocols, while cautioning against early speculation.
Mereeotlhe added that the safety of staff, patients and the public remains a top priority.
“Appropriate steps will be taken pending the outcome of the investigation to strengthen operational practices and reinforce policy adherence," she said.
