BUZZING with spirit and eager anticipation, a Kimberley school is set to launch its most imaginative fund-raiser yet - "Plak ’n Onnie".

Eureka Primary School’s unique campaign turns the tables on traditional carnivals and cake sales by putting three lucky (or unlucky) teachers in the political hot seat … and then plastering them to the wall with duct tape!

A Miniature Democracy in Action

On June 17, the school will hold its very own democratic election, mirroring South Africa’s national poll, and by doing this, the learners also get a better understanding of how democracy works.

  • Voting Tax: Every learner pays an R5 “tax” for the right to vote.
  • Learner IDs: Pupils craft their ID documents, complete with a photo, for admission to the polling station.
  • Ink and Ballots: learners show their IDs, have their thumbs inked, and cast votes across three colour-coded boxes representing the “parties”:
    • Junior Primary
    • Senior Primary
    • Independent Party

Once the votes are tallied, one teacher from each “party” will emerge as the winning candidate and will need to represent their party with pride

Duck Tape, Drama and Duct Tape Sales

The grand finale takes place on June 20, when the victorious teachers will be “plakked” against the tennis court wall in a sticky spectacle. But learners won’t be left empty-handed:

  • Duct Tape for Sale: R30 secures a 5-metre length – enough to take part in the action and ensure your favourite candidate stays firmly in place.
  • Live Stream Access: Parents and supporters can witness every memorable moment online as the teachers brave the tape on the big day.

Why Plak ’n Onnie?

“Plak ’n Onnie” roughly translates to “Stick a Teacher,” a playful nod to the hands-on fun learners will have sticking teachers (“onnies”) to the wall with duct tape. All proceeds go directly back into school resources and upcoming projects, ensuring every vote and every roll of tape makes a real difference.

With campaign posters already brightening the corridors and campaign slogans echoing through the playground, Plak ’n Onnie promises a fund-raiser packed with laughter, learning, and lively participation. Election day is June 17, and the great “Plak n Onnie” goes down (or up) on June 20.
