A 61-YEAR-OLD man believed to be behind a string of ATM card scams in Kuruman has been arrested, thanks to the vigilance of two local Highway Patrol officers.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the alleged fraudster’s luck ran out on Sunday, June 1, when the police caught him red-handed during a theft incident at a local business.
The arrest came just a day after multiple reports surfaced about victims being swindled at ATMs across town.
Further police investigations uncovered a haul of evidence in the suspect’s possession, including multiple bank cards, cash, clothing, and a cellphone.
The police believe the man had been targeting ATM users in a calculated scam and are now appealing to residents who suspect they may have been duped to come forward.
The suspect is due to appear in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court shortly.
The acting John Taolo Gaetsewe district commissioner, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, praised Warrant Officer Jan Burger and Sergeant Veliswa Mnguni for their sharp instincts and swift response, which led to the suspect’s arrest and the recovery of key evidence.
