AN OLIFANTSHOEK man who turned a butcher’s knife into a deadly weapon during an argument has been sentenced to 12 years behind bars for murder.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that Melon Kgokolo, 44, was convicted and sentenced in the Kathu Regional Court this week for the fatal stabbing of 45-year-old Johannes Olyn in Diepkloof last August.

The incident happened on August 3, 2024, when a short exchange between the two men quickly escalated. Kgokolo, armed with a butcher’s knife, stabbed Olyn multiple times in the neck.

Detective Sergeant Danny Kgatlane of the Olifantshoek Detectives led the investigation that helped secure the conviction and an effective 12 years’ imprisonment for Kgokolo.

The South African Police Service management in the Northern Cape praised Detective Sergeant Kgatlane for his “unwavering dedication”.

The SAPS also reaffirmed its commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring justice is upheld in communities
