THE GALESHEWE police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a 10-year-old boy was killed when he was run over by a police vehicle near the Sewende Laan informal settlement over the weekend.

EFF provincial chairperson Shadrack Tlhaole has called for a full inquiry into the incident and for the immediate suspension of the officials involved.

He stated that the child was playing under a tree in front of his home when SAPS members approached at high speed in the residential area.

“We condemn the tragic and senseless killing of Lethabo. They brutally ran over the child with complete disregard for the lives they swore to protect. We stand in solidarity with the family of the deceased and the Galeshewe community,” said Tlhaole.

He urged that there be full accountability for what he called a reckless loss of life.

“Lethabo was not just a statistic – he was a beloved son, nephew, friend, and a bright light in the eyes of his family and community. His life mattered, and his death will not be in vain. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pledge to pursue justice for his death.”

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said that the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) for further investigation.

“The incident took place on Sunday, May 25, at approximately 2.35pm. A constable attached to the Galeshewe SAPS was en route to attend to a complaint. He reportedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with a 10-year-old boy. The child succumbed to his injuries,” she added.
