PUPILS at William Pescod High School in Kimberley were dismissed early last week following an alleged act of gangsterism, after pupils from another school reportedly arrived at the premises with knives and other dangerous weapons.
Northern Cape Department of Education spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe confirmed that a scuffle occurred outside the school on May 22, involving both pupils and individuals not currently enrolled at William Pescod.
“The incident is believed to be related to alleged gangsterism, with the primary perpetrator identified as an out-of-school youth,” he said.
He added that district officials visited the school on Friday, found the situation to be under control, and confirmed that normal teaching and learning had resumed.
“The South African Police Service (SAPS) was present to closely monitor the situation. In addition, we have requested the police to conduct random, unannounced searches at schools to further ensure the safety of both learners and educators. The safety of our school communities is a top priority for the department, as it directly impacts the quality of education,” added Van der Merwe.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the police were requested to monitor the situation on May 23 following the incident last Thursday.
“The police were requested to monitor the situation for any further eventuality. No further incidents were reported to the police,” he added.
