Four family members killed in horrific car crash on R31

Four family members were killed in an accident on the R31 on the weekend.

THE KIMBERLEY police have opened a case of culpable homicide after four people were killed in a motor vehicle accident on the R31 road near Platfontein on Saturday, May 24, at around 8.40pm.

A Grade 4 pupil who was also involved in the crash remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said on Monday that the accident involved a head-on collision between a truck and a Mitsubishi SUV.

“The occupants of the Mitsubishi – a family consisting of the father, 35, mother, 38, and their two children – died in the accident. Another child was taken to hospital for medical treatment,” said Kock.

He added that the truck driver, who was travelling alone, escaped unharmed.

“The investigation is ongoing, said Kock.

Kimberley Girls’ High School extended its condolences following the death of Grade 9 pupil Zahara Verkoper, one of the victims of the crash.

“This devastating news has deeply affected our school. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Zahara’s family, friends, classmates, and educators. We keep all those impacted in our thoughts during this time of immense loss,” the school shared on social media.
