A GRIEKWASTAD man who scalded a woman with boiling water has been sentenced to five years in prison, following a disturbing attack that left the victim with serious injuries.
The incident took place on December 29, 2024, when 37-year-old Frans De Wee violated a protection order and poured hot water over a 42-year-old woman during a violent altercation.
The assault, which occurred in the small Northern Cape town of Griekwastad, was swiftly investigated by police, leading to De Wee’s arrest and prosecution.
This week, the Griekwastad Magistrate’s Court handed down a five-year direct imprisonment sentence for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and contravention of a protection order.
The Pixley ka Seme district commissioner, Major-General Nomana Mtukushe, reaffirmed the police’s commitment to fighting gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), calling the sentence a step forward in the ongoing battle to hold perpetrators accountable.
She also applauded the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Hillary Bingwa, whose thorough work ensured justice was served.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said GBVF remains a top priority in the province, with intensified efforts under way to support victims and bring offenders to book.
