A 44-YEAR-OLD Kimberley woman will spend the next eight years behind bars after being found guilty of conspiring to have her husband kidnapped and killed.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said that Mirriam Leshiba Tau was sentenced by the Kimberley Regional Court following a failed murder plot that was foiled in 2022 thanks to a tip-off from a community member.

Tau had tried to enlist someone to carry out the crime, but the individual she approached instead alerted the authorities.

An urgent investigation by the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation Unit, working closely with Crime Intelligence, led to Tau’s arrest on May 15, 2022 - before any harm could come to her husband. The takedown was led by Lieutenant-Colonel Doggy Magugu.

Tau was formally charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Investigators Warrant Officer Eunice Goeiman and Constable Mpumelelo Maruping were instrumental in the case, successfully opposing bail and building a strong case that led to Tau’s conviction.

In addition to the sentence of eight years' direct imprisonment, the court also ruled that Tau is unfit to own a firearm, in accordance with the Firearms Control Act.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, welcomed the outcome and praised the investigating officers for their dedication and unwavering commitment to securing justice.

Sergeant Pilane encouraged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious or criminal activity through the MySAPS app or Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111.
