THE NORTHERN Cape MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Bentley Vass, handed over 10 houses to beneficiaries of the Calvinia 200 Housing Project in the Namakwa District on May 9.

A spokesperson for the MEC's office, Tebogo Monyo, said the handover formed part of the R1 billion housing project launched in January 2024 by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Premier Zamani Saul, as part of efforts to address the significant housing backlog in the province.

“Houses were handed over to beneficiaries residing in the Hantam, Nama Khoi, Khai-Ma and Kamiesberg local municipalities,” said Monyo.

Vass stated that houses would be handed over in batches as each project is completed.

“We are encouraging all our contractors across the province to work with speed to ensure that beneficiaries receive their houses sooner rather than later. We are not going to tolerate undue delays and shoddy workmanship on this project,” the MEC added.
