TWO MEN suspected of being involved in stock theft were arrested during a late-night police sting, after officers recovered 13 stolen cattle on a plot near Upington.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the arrest followed a co-ordinated operation involving multiple specialised SAPS units, including the Upington Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, Rural Safety and Highway Patrol teams.
Acting on intelligence about suspicious activity on grazing land outside the town, officers swooped in around 9.30pm on May 8 and found the cattle on the property.
The livestock, valued at around R130,000, is believed to have been stolen, although their rightful owners have yet to be identified.
The police have urged livestock owners in the region who may be missing cattle to report to their nearest police station with proof of ownership. They also reminded farmers to ensure their animals are brand-marked to simplify identification and help curb stock theft.
The suspects, aged 37 and 39, remain in custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
Anyone with information about the ownership of the recovered cattle is urged to contact the Upington Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit on 079 529 3930, 082 454 4849 or 054 337 3460/1. Alternatively, call SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app. All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
The ZF Mgcawu district commissioner, Major-General Monica Sebili, praised the multi-disciplinary SAPS team for their unwavering commitment and continued efforts in tackling stock theft.
