THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison has reported a notable decline in the number of road fatalities in the province over the Easter weekend.
According to departmental spokesperson Rennie Andrias, six fatalities were recorded in the province during Easter 2025, as announced in the national road safety report released by the Minister of Transport on April 29.
"The significant reduction in fatal crashes and fatalities in the Northern Cape is a testament to the work done by all stakeholders in the Provincial Road Safety Committee. During the 2024 Easter period, the province recorded 17 fatalities, while six fatalities were recorded this year," said Andrias.
The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Limakatso Koloi, commended road users for adhering to the rules of the road and thanked various roleplayers – including public transport operators, traditional and religious leaders, and freight companies – for their contribution to the improved safety outcomes.
“A special word of appreciation goes to pedestrians across the province for their contribution to safer roads,” Koloi added.
She further extended her gratitude to traffic law enforcement officers and members of the South African Police Service for their commitment and hard work throughout the Easter 2025 road safety campaign.
