A FAMILY has been left shocked and heartbroken, as no one has been held to account for the death of their three-year-old toddler – killed in an alleged hit-and-run accident in Warrenton.

No arrests have been made yet in connection with the incident two weeks ago in Las Vegas township, Ikhutseng.

The young boy, Lebone Jakkals, died from injuries sustained during the incident on April 11.

Community members took to the streets on April 17 – the same day Jakkals was laid to rest – marching from the Ikhutseng community hall to the Warrenton police station.

A picket was held outside the station, where residents demanded justice and called for swift action.

A small group of community members returned to the Warrenton police station on Wednesday, frustrated with what they described as the slow pace of the investigation.

“No updates were provided as to why the driver of the vehicle was not apprehended,” they said.

The boy’s uncle, Segomotso Jakkals, explained that his nephew had been walking home after playing with friends between 5 and 6pm when the incident occurred.

“Family members arrived to find his lifeless body on the scene,” he said.

He added that Lebone’s young friends witnessed the accident and were able to identify the driver.

“The children recognised him, as he is often seen driving around the neighbourhood. However, the motorist denies any involvement.”

Segomotso said Lebone’s funeral was held on April 17.

“He was the youngest of three siblings. The family is devastated over the innocent life that was so ruthlessly taken, without anyone accepting responsibility for his death. We are unable to find closure.”
