THE SOUTH African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape is urging motorists to exercise caution following the recent opening of the fifth sluice gate at the Vaal Dam and a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the province.
A Yellow Level 4 warning indicates severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours that may result in:
The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has urged farmers and community members to take proactive steps to protect animals that may be at risk due to rising water levels.
- Move livestock and domestic animals to higher ground as a priority. Floodwaters can rise quickly and unpredictably.
- Ensure that dogs are not chained or confined in areas where they cannot escape rising water.
- Relocate animals housed in paddocks or pens near rivers.
If evacuation is necessary, do not leave animals behind – their survival depends on your actions.
If you see animals in distress or abandoned in flood-affected areas, report the situation to your local SPCA or contact the NSPCA immediately at 011 907 3590.

- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions and pull over safely if necessary.
