TRAILBLAZE Travels and Sustainability, a non-profit organisation, is employing young artists to rejuvenate the city and attract visitors by painting eye-catching wall murals.

The founder and CEO of the organisation, Joshua Rolse, said their mission is to develop and sustain tourism, culture and artists of the Northern Cape and surrounding areas, starting in Kimberley.

“We aim to harness the rich heritage and unique cultural assets of this region to promote economic growth, community engagement, and cultural preservation. We wish to attract visitors by showcasing the Northern Cape's natural beauty, historical landmarks, tourist destinations and cultural events,” said Rolse.

He added that the project also encouraged artistic expression and offered support to local artists through programmes, exhibitions and collaborations.

“The Kimberley Mural Series project was curated with the aim of celebrating the rich cultural heritage, history and vibrancy of Kimberley, with a special focus on the Khoi and San people of the Northern Cape.

“Partnering with local artists, to transform public spaces with vibrant murals, creating a visual narrative that honours the past and inspires the future. After the registration of Trailblaze Travels in April 2024, this series was our first-ever project.”

Art is being used to promote tourism and upskill youths in the city.

Rolse added that 25 youths were employed under the guidance of a team leader.

“Five main artists came up with compelling mural designs in alignment with the theme. Each artist had assistants to help them turn their design into a reality with the Trailblaze Design Lead giving guidance and assistance, where required.

“The Kimberley Mural Series black-tie event not only provides local community artists with employment opportunities but also a chance to network, exhibit their art and get their names out there.”

Rolse said that an art exhibition would be held to allow artists to showcase their work and sell their goods.

“A documentary was filmed to allow the artists to offer insights into their designs. Moving forward, we aim to continue with more murals and create artworks all over Kimberley and surrounding areas.”

Trailblaze Travels and Sustainability, a non-profit organisation, aims to restore historical sites, promote indigenous culture and attract tourists through its murals.
