THE ANC has retained Ward 1 in the Joe Morolong Local Municipality following a by-election held on March 19, which was necessitated by the death of a councillor.
The ward was contested by Pako Matthews Bareki of the ANC, Otshepeng Smock of the MK Party, and EFF candidate Tshiamo Sekgetho.
According to the Electoral Commission (IEC), which released the results on March 24, the ANC secured victory with 54.1 percent of the votes. The party received 1,190 votes, followed by the EFF with 874 votes, while the MK party garnered 135 votes.
Voter turnout was recorded at 62.2 percent.
In the 2021 municipal elections, the ANC won the ward with 62.7 percent of the vote.
