POLICE officers tackling illegal mining operations in the Northern Cape are stepping up their game - not just in law enforcement, but in fitness too. Operation Vala Umgodi has introduced physical training sessions every Wednesday, ensuring officers stay sharp, agile, and battle-ready for the intense demands of the job.
According to provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the initiative, which kicked off this week, is more than just a workout.
Before hitting the training grounds, officers were briefed by the SAPS Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) team, which highlighted the importance of mental resilience alongside physical strength. Chaplain Ibrahim Maretele, supported by Warrant Officers Virginia Cossa and Kgomotso Bessie, encouraged officers to open up about the stresses of their work, reminding them that professional support is always available.
The message was clear: the demands of the operation are no easy task, and staying mentally and physically fit is crucial. Officers facing psychological, emotional or spiritual challenges are encouraged to seek support from EHW - whether through self-referral or with the help of colleagues, commanders, or family members.
The operational commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Mongale, reinforced the significance of these training sessions, stating that the unpredictable and often high-risk nature of cracking down on illicit mining requires a force that is not only well-trained but also physically prepared. The commitment to regular fitness training ensures officers remain at their peak, ready to respond swiftly and effectively to any threats they may encounter in the field.
