A TARGETED police operation in Jan Kempdorp has led to the arrest of a 70-year-old scrap metal dealer caught in possession of suspected stolen goods worth an estimated R30,000.
According to Northern Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock, the police swooped on the business premises on Tuesday morning, acting on intelligence linking the dealer to illicit activities.
The sting operation, spearheaded by the SAPS Provincial Firearms, Liquor and Second-Hand Goods unit in collaboration with the Provincial Organised Crime team and the Essential Infrastructure Task Team, uncovered a significant haul of copper cables, copper pipes, solar panels, and floodlights.
Authorities in the Northern Cape have been intensifying efforts to combat damage to essential infrastructure in the province, which continues to cripple service delivery and public utilities.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Jan Kempdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.
Lieutenant-Colonel Kock urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities linked to second-hand goods and scrap metal dealings. Community members can provide anonymous tips via the SAPS Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS app.
He also reiterated the police’s warning against purchasing stolen goods, emphasising that tackling the illegal trade is essential to curbing infrastructure damage. "Say no to stolen goods!"
