THE NORTHERN Cape SAPS management has welcomed the sentencing of a Victoria West man who brutally attacked a young woman, leaving her with serious stab wounds.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said that Melvinario Adams, 27, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars by the Victoria West Regional Court on March 6 after being found guilty of attempted murder.

The horrific attack took place on the night of Wednesday, May 8, 2024, when police responded to an emergency call reporting a stabbing. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a 20-year-old woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was rushed to hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Adams was subsequently arrested and detained on charges of attempted murder. The police successfully opposed bail, ensuring he remained behind bars throughout the trial.

The provincial SAPS management praised the swift action of law enforcement and the dedication of the investigative team.

The investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Basil Abrahams, was commended for his hard work in ensuring that a perpetrator of gender-based violence (GBV) has been removed from the streets for a long time.
