KIMBERLEY welcomes a new leader at the helm of Diamantveld High School as Francois de Kock steps into the role of principal. With an extensive background in education and a wealth of experience in top-performing schools, de Kock is eager to uphold the school's rich traditions while fostering growth and excellence in all areas.
A Journey Through Education
De Kock began his teaching career in 1992 at Hoërskool Jeugland. Over the past three decades, he has taught at some of South Africa’s most esteemed schools, including Affies, Waterkloof and Garsfontein.
His leadership credentials include serving as the Director of Rugby at Hoërskool Garsfontein from 2011 to 2016 and later taking on administrative roles at Hoërskool Kempton Park, where he was deputy principal before assuming the position of principal in 2019.
Lessons from Prestigious Schools
Reflecting on his tenure at elite institutions, De Kock emphasises the balance between innovation and tradition. “To remain at the forefront of modern education while maintaining core values is essential.
“If you want to be one of the best schools, it requires hard work. I am driven by performance and want to encourage everyone to give their best.”
Leadership and Management Philosophy
His leadership style is built on empowerment rather than authority. “Leadership is about guidance. A principal is not a boss but someone who empowers people to grow.
The management team plays a crucial role in a school’s success, working closely with the School Governing Body to ensure accountability and continuous improvement,” he says.
First Impressions of Diamantveld
De Kock was drawn to Diamantveld’s strong traditions and its involvement in major sporting events such as the Wildeklawer festival.
“Diamantveld has an incredible 90-year legacy, and I am a person who values tradition and discipline. The people of Kimberley have welcomed me warmly, and I am excited to work with the staff and learners to unlock the school’s full potential.”
A Vision for the Future
His vision for Diamantveld is clear - enhance its strengths rather than overhaul its identity. “I don’t want to change Diamantveld; I want to improve on what is already great. Academics remain the priority, and it’s important to cultivate a mindset where learners are eager to learn and excel.”
Balancing Academics and Extracurriculars
De Kock acknowledges the significance of sports and cultural activities in holistic education.
“A school is not just an academic institution; it is also an environment where learners learn essential values through sport and culture. Lessons in discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship prepare learners for life beyond the classroom.
“We aim to provide more exposure to more learners and compete against the best schools, with top-tier facilities and quality coaching playing a key role.”
Inspiring Leadership
Having worked under esteemed school leaders like Dr Becker at Waterkloof and Dr Edwards at Affies, De Kock has adopted a leadership style centred on positivity, engagement, and leading by example.
“I believe everything is possible. To motivate my learners and staff, I must set an example, be involved, and never expect something from them that I wouldn’t do myself.”
Challenges in Education
De Kock acknowledges that maintaining relevance in a rapidly changing world is one of the biggest challenges schools face.
“Diamantveld must remain a school of choice and uphold a value system that instils pride in everyone associated with it. The hope for South Africa lies in our youth, and we must empower them to be the key to future success.”
Strengthening Community Engagement
He strongly believes in fostering strong ties between the school, parents, alumni and the broader community.
“I believe in involvement at all levels and in clear communication. I have an open-door policy and see everyone as equally important. Schools are the backbone of Kimberley, and we must all work together to ensure that local schools remain institutions of excellence.”
Instilling a Culture of Hard Work
De Kock lives by the philosophy that “success is a delicious dish, and hard work is the salt.” His aim is to instil this mindset in Diamantveld’s learners and staff.
“Hard work, self-discipline and self-belief are essential. My goal is to make a difference in every Diamantveld learner’s life, just as this school will make a difference in mine. One must continue to dream and believe.”
As De Kock steps into his role as principal, he brings a clear vision and a deep commitment to nurturing academic excellence, sportsmanship, and a strong school community. With his leadership, Diamantveld High School is set to continue its legacy of excellence while embracing new opportunities for growth.
