A NORTHERN Cape man who pocketed over R323,000 meant for his late brother’s beneficiaries has been sentenced to five years of direct imprisonment.
Hawks provincial spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi said that the 61-year-old accused, Johan Isaacs, appeared in the Upington Specialised Commercial Crime Court on January 28, where he was convicted of theft.
Isaacs was appointed as the executor of his late brother’s estate, a position that required him to distribute the assets to the rightful beneficiaries. However, instead of fulfilling his duty, he kept the entire R323,773 - which was paid into his account by the financial services company Liberty - for his personal use.
The case was investigated by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit, which led to Isaacs’ arrest in October 2018. He made several court appearances before finally being sentenced this week.
The court handed him five years of direct imprisonment.
