INTELLIGENCE-driven, disruptive operations conducted by the multi-disciplinary teams of Operation Vala Umgodi in the Frances Baard and Namakwa districts over the weekend resulted in the arrest of several suspects on various charges ranging from illicit mining to dealing in drugs and the illegal possession of ammunition.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the arrests followed information received about the suspects' alleged illegal dealings.
“In one of the cases, members received information about suspected illegal mining activities taking place at a mining hot-spot area in Kleinzee. Further investigation led to the arrest of four suspects between the ages of 35 and 57 for alleged illegal mining and trespassing. The police seized equipment suspected to be used in the commission of illicit mining and bags containing suspected diamond-bearing material,” said Shemane.
He added that two suspects were arrested in Barkly West and one in Windsorton for alleged illegal possession of ammunition and violations of the Immigration Act.
“In the Frances Baard District, members received information about illegal activities taking place at identified locations in Barkly West. The police pounced and arrested five undocumented persons between the ages of 26 and 47 years old, as well as seizing ammunition. Furthermore, members received information regarding the sale of drugs in Windsorton. Upon arrival, a male suspect was searched and suspected drugs were found in his possession. The 65-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested,” said Shemane.
He noted that more arrests took place in Kimberley.
“Another location in Kimberley was identified and searched. Drugs were found and confiscated, and a 50-year-old man was apprehended for possession of drugs. A 36-year-old male was also apprehended in Galeshewe for dealing in drugs in an unrelated matter. Drugs with an estimated street value of R3,000 were confiscated, along with a substantial amount of money believed to be the proceeds of criminal activities,” Shemane said.
He emphasised the police's ongoing commitment to tackling illicit mining and related crimes and urged the public to report criminal activities.
