The MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Transport, Safety and Liaison, Bentley Vass has called upon all motorists to obey the rules of the road, as holidaymakers travel to their various destinations.
He urged motorists to buckle up and avoid speeding or drinking and driving, as part of the key principles to ensure safer roads and reduce fatalities over the festive season.
Vass led a multi-disciplinary road block along with the provincial traffic department and the South African Police Service (SAPS), on the R27 road linking Calvinia and Niewoudtville in the Hantam local municipality on December 17.
Spokesperson fo Coghsa Tebogo Monyo said 158 vehicles were stopped, searched and inspected for roadworthiness and several fines were issued during the roadblock.
“Similar roadblocks and safety campaigns will be rolled out across the Province,” he added.
