Vosburg man handed suspended sentence for statutory rape of 15-year-old boy

A 32-YEAR-OLD Northern Cape man has been handed a six-year prison sentence, wholly suspended, after being convicted of statutory rape involving a 15-year-old boy in Vosburg.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the incident occurred last year at the accused's shanty.

“On August 10, 2024, at about 9.15pm, the teenager was on his way to a friend when he was accosted by the accused. The accused lured him to his into his shack in Donkerhoek in Vosburg and raped him. The father of the teenager subsequently reported the matter to the police. The accused was arrested and on November 6, 2024, the Carnarvon Regional Court sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended, provided that he does not commit the same crime in the mentioned period. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” said Kock.

He added that the investigating officer was praised for her work on the case.

“The SAPS management commended Detective Constable Tumelo Louw of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for her meticulous investigation that led to the conviction and sentence,” said Kock.
