AN ALERT response from the commander of the Upington SAPS Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit, Captain Jakobus Botes, set off a swift police operation that led to the recovery of stolen cattle valued at R150,000 near Groblershoop.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said that the vigilant action came after Captain Botes received a crucial tip-off about suspected stolen cattle being transported from Upington to Kimberley.
A description of the vehicle and trailer was circulated, leading to the Groblershoop police spotting and stopping the vehicle in question on October 22.
The operation led to the recovery of 10 unbranded cattle, with three found deceased on the trailer. The total estimated value of the livestock is R150,000. Additionally, the police seized a Toyota bakkie worth R120,000 and a trailer valued at R100,000.
Two men, aged 31 and 35, were arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen property. Sergeant Shemane said the rightful owner of the cattle has yet to be identified.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Groblershoop Magistrate's Court on October 24.
Sergeant Shemane said the police are urging livestock owners to mark their animals to assist in identification and recovery in cases of theft.
