PROVINCIAL and district SAPS management led the Provincial Commissioner's Community Imbizo in Concordia in the Namakwa District on October 17.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers reported that the outreach event was attended by several dignitaries, including Major-General Thabo Mphuthi, the Northern Cape deputy provincial commissioner for Corporate Services, and Brigadier Schalk Andrews, the Namakwa district commissioner, as well as various provincial heads, senior officers, and SAPS members. Representatives from multiple government departments and community organisations were also present.
The programme was broadcast live via a community radio station, Radio NFM, providing an opportunity for community members who were unable to attend to follow the proceedings.
Brigadier Irene Kopeledi, the provincial head of Pro-Active Policing, led the event and emphasised its purpose, while Brigadier Samuel Mathe, the provincial head of Crime Registrar, provided an overview of prevalent crimes in the area, highlighting high-crime zones where policing efforts will be intensified.
Government department representatives offered messages of support, focusing on the delivery of efficient services to the community.
In her keynote address, Major-General Mphuthi underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships to reclaim the streets from criminals. She stressed that gender-based violence and femicide crimes, particularly domestic violence, must receive urgent attention.
The ongoing policing of liquor outlets was emphasised, as the misuse and abuse of alcohol are significant contributors to contact crimes. Major-General Mphuthi also urged tuck shop owners to adhere to operating hours and to enhance personal security.
In closing, she reminded the audience that the safety of the nation relies on collective actions. The provincial launch of the Safer Festive Season will take place in Port Nolloth on November 1, aimed at ensuring the well-being and safety of residents and tourists during the festive period and beyond. She called on the community to act responsibly, especially regarding drinking and driving. As schools will be closed, parents were encouraged to ensure their children's safety at all times and for motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and practise road safety.
Panellists representing various departments and entities engaged with the audience to address complaints and concerns, working collaboratively to formulate solutions. The SAPS Provincial Inspectorate was present to record and address these complaints.
Colonel Ehlers said community outreach efforts will continue in the district to ensure the delivery of efficient services and to operationalise the information provided by the community.
