THE INCLUSIVITY of the gay community is one of the focus areas that newly-crowned Mr Gay Nation SA 2024 Northern Cape, Richard Theron, has vowed to advocate for.

Theron, who was born in Standerton, Mpumalanga, has made his home in the Northern Cape and has been a resident of Concordia in Namaqualand for almost 25 years.

Expressing his excitement over his recent victory, Theron emphasised his commitment to using his platform to support those marginalised by society.

“This victory symbolises a significant moment for the LGBTQ+ community in the region. I want to be a beacon of hope for those in our community who feel unheard and unseen. This win not only highlights my charisma and dedication but also serves as a platform to uplift marginalised voices throughout the Province.

“As Mr Gay Nation SA Northern Cape, I am determined to make a meaningful impact by fostering understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ+ issues in the area,” said Theron.

He added that he has already identified ways to promote acceptance, not only of the LGBTQ+ community but of all marginalised members of society.

“I plan to be a visible figure in the community. I want to engage with local organisations, participate in pride events, and work towards creating safe spaces for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation. I intend to collaborate with local schools and community groups to promote education and awareness around LGBTQ+ rights as well as social ills that affect the community.

“By sharing my story and encouraging open dialogue, I hope to break down barriers and combat stigma. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and accepted.”

He added that, along with his advocacy efforts, he is eager to celebrate the rich culture and beauty of the Northern Cape during his reign.

“I also aim to highlight local talent and businesses, showcasing the Province's unique contributions to the larger South African tapestry. I want to ensure that the Northern Cape shines brightly on the national stage.

“I plan on embarking on this exciting journey, with a heart set on making a difference. I am ready to embrace the challenges ahead and lead with love and pride,” Theron said with a smile.
