THE WILLIAM Pescod High Alumni Trust has announced that the annual Solly Hunter Memorial Lecture will take place on Saturday, September 21, at 9am. The lecture will be held in Auditorium 2 in the Humanities Building at Sol Plaatje University.

This year's lecture will focus on celebrating the pivotal role of non-racial sport in the liberation of South Africa, highlighting the significant contributions made by political activists such as Solly Hunter. The theme aligns with the enduring impact of Hunter’s work, both in the sporting arena and the political landscape.

Key topics to be discussed include:

  • Solly Hunter’s influence in both sport and politics.
  • A reflection on the history of sport in Kimberley and Griqualand West (GW).
  • The importance of school sports in creating a provincial and national sporting legacy.
  • Celebrating the sporting icons of William Pescod High School (WPHS) over the years.
  • Special recognition of WPHS boys, girls and administrators for their achievements in sport.
  • WPHS’s long-standing contribution to sport in South Africa.

A Q&A session will follow the lecture, allowing attendees to engage with the speakers and deepen their understanding of the topics presented.

Invitation to alumni: A weekend of celebration

In addition to the lecture, WPHS alumni are invited to join the William Pescod High School Alumni Celebration Weekend, from September 20 to 22.

Kicking off the festivities, on Saturday, September 21, at 7am, there will be a fun walk along part of the WPHS Memorial Route, starting at WPHS in Church Street and concluding at Sol Plaatje University. This walk will be a great way to reconnect with fellow alumni and reminisce about the school’s history before heading to the Solly Hunter Memorial Lecture.

Saturday evening alumni celebration

To conclude the day, there will be an alumni celebration function at St Cyprian’s Cathedral Hall, starting at 7.30pm.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own platters and cooler boxes, with a cover charge of R100 per person. It promises to be a lively evening of celebration and reconnecting with old friends.

This event is open to all WPHS alumni, and everyone is encouraged to take part in this meaningful weekend of remembrance and celebration.
