Upington cops seize R4 million dagga shipment and illicit cigarettes
A SWIFT response by the Upington Border Police led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of dagga and illicit cigarettes on September 5.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela, the officers acted on a tip-off about a Toyota bakkie suspected of transporting illegal drugs. The vehicle was intercepted just a few kilometres outside of Upington. A subsequent search revealed dagga with an estimated street value of R3,915,000. The two male occupants, aged 52 and 27, were arrested on charges of dealing in drugs.
In a separate operation on the same day, the Upington Border Police members responded to reports of illicit cigarettes being stored and sold at a wholesaler in Upington. The inspection uncovered R2,035,940 worth of illicit cigarettes. In consultation with SARS Customs Services, a raid was executed, leading to the registration of an enquiry docket for further investigation.
