Operation Shanela addresses crime in the greater Upington

A COMPREHENSIVE police operation led by ZF Mgcawu district commissioner Brigadier Monica Sebili, alongside several local police station commanders, addressed various criminal activities in the greater Upington area.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the “successful operation” included co-ordinated efforts by Upington station commander Brigadier Peet Coetzee, Rosedale station commander Colonel Kgosietsile Hikwana and Paballelo station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Johan Isaacs

Masegela reported that the operation began in Rosedale with a school raid, resulting in the seizure of illegal items, including dangerous weapons. Additionally, a tuck shop in the Rosedale informal settlement was raided, leading to the confiscation of liquor valued at R3,960.

The operation continued with the serving of final protection orders in the area.

In Paballelo, a vehicle checkpoint was set up, where 518 vehicles and 466 individuals were stopped and searched. Traffic fines totalling R8,050 were issued for various violations.

The final phase of the operation took place at the taxi rank plaza, focusing on illegal gambling activities. Fines amounting to R1,200 were issued. Compliance inspections were also conducted at licensed liquor outlets.
