THE HAWKS’ Serious Corruption Investigating team recently arrested a 54-year-old Northern Cape magistrate on fraud charges.

According to Hawks provincial spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tebogo Thebe, the man was appointed as an acting magistrate for the Calvinia district in October 2016. His responsibilities required him to travel to various courts within the district, with the state covering his travel and subsistence expenses.

“He is accused of submitting fraudulent claims to his employer, resulting in a financial loss of R2,087.12,” stated Thebe.

The suspect is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the Calvinia Magistrate’s Court on August 21.
