GENDER-based violence and femicide (GBVF) advocacy groups have welcomed the court's decision to deny bail to a 51-year-old man accused of repeatedly raping and assaulting his girlfriend. The accused allegedly also violently tore out her hair and braids while holding her hostage at his home.

Judgment was delivered on Thursday after the accused, Zwelibanzi Ngonyoza, made a formal bail application in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court this week.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Northern Cape spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the accused was facing seven charges including rape and assault GBH.

“The State views the charges in a serious light. The accused’s application for bail was refused. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on September 12,” said Senokoatsane.

The director of the Shaine Griqua Advice and Development Centre, Shaine Griqua, believed the court’s decision was made in the interests of justice.

“We call on the community to stop withdrawing cases and to report all forms of abuse,” said Griqua.

Northern Cape GBVF convener Gregory Nyongane added that the defence could not prove any exceptional circumstances to justify the release of the accused on bail.

“Rape is a despicable crime that inflicts severe emotional trauma. Accused persons who are facing serious charges must not be awarded bail,” said Nyongane.

Nehawu Frances Baard regional secretary Lerato Sithole also welcomed the outcome of the bail hearing.

“The Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Amendment Act is serving to protect women who are abused,” she noted.
