Northern Cape man sentenced for assaulting toddler with a brick

IN A RECENT ruling by the Mothibistad Regional Court, a 21-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a two-year-old toddler.

The incident occurred on August 22, 2023, at the victim’s place of residence.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane, during the trial, evidence revealed that the accused, who is the victim’s cousin, struck the child in the face with a brick while the toddler was playing outside. The brutal attack left the child unconscious and the accused fled the scene.

The toddler was transported to a local medical facility for treatment. Subsequently, a case of assault was opened with the police, leading to the cousin’s arrest and subsequent charges.

Detective Sergeant Matshediso John Boikanyo diligently investigated the case. As a result of his efforts, the accused was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison, with a five-year suspension.
