Operation Shanela nets 297 suspects in Northern Cape crime crackdown

OPERATION Shanela in the Northern Cape has maintained its relentless pursuit of justice, resulting in the apprehension of 297 suspects.
According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the week-long high-density operation, which commenced on July 15, involved a comprehensive approach to law enforcement. Police actions were strategically executed in problematic areas, including crime intelligence-driven operations, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, high-visibility patrols, compliance inspections and stop-and-search actions.
The primary focus was on combating contact crimes, property-related offences, drug-related crimes and illegal liquor outlets.
During the week-long operation, authorities arrested 297 suspects for various crimes, including drug possession, drug dealing, illegal liquor sales, attempted murder, assault GBH and burglary.
Notably, this includes 96 wanted suspects who were traced and apprehended by detectives, ending their evasion of law enforcement. These suspects were involved in crimes ranging from business robbery to rape and assault GBH.
A total of 6,141 individuals and 3,731 vehicles underwent thorough searches during the operation. Additionally, 10 unlicensed liquor outlets were shut down and 1,289 litres of alcohol were confiscated.
Efforts also led to the seizure of dangerous weapons and a significant quantity of drugs, including dagga, tik and mandrax tablets.
In addition, community engagements and outreach programmes were carried out across all districts to address community needs and concerns. These initiatives focused on critical issues such as substance abuse, school bullying, the presence of dangerous weapons, alcohol misuse and gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF)-related crimes.
Ehlers said that these proactive measures will persist throughout the Province, particularly in high-crime areas, with the aim of thwarting criminal activities.
She added that communities deserve commendation for providing valuable information that led to the apprehension of offenders. Their ongoing support in exposing criminals remains crucial for law enforcement efforts.
