IN A DRAMATIC high-speed pursuit on the N7 highway, the Northern Cape police apprehended three suspects for drug dealing and attempted murder.
The incident unfolded late at night, near Steinkopf, as officers from the Springbok Public Order Police acted swiftly on a tip-off.
According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the officers received information about a vehicle carrying three suspects believed to be transporting drugs from Okiep to Port Nolloth. The police operationalised the intelligence, positioning themselves along the N7 route.
At approximately 11.30pm, the officers spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it by cordoning off the road. However, the driver sped off when he saw the police, initiating a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, one of the suspects was observed discarding objects from the car window.
Despite the suspects’ evasive manoeuvres, the police successfully halted the vehicle. Upon inspection, they discovered a significant consignment of drugs, including tik, mandrax tablets and mandrax powder. The estimated street value of the seized drugs totalled R72,636. Additionally, the officers found cash believed to be proceeds from criminal activities.
The three suspects, aged 28, 40 and 41, now face charges related to drug trafficking, defeating the ends of justice and attempted murder. Their Toyota Corolla was also seized as part of the investigation.
Ehlers emphasised that the police in the Namakwa District remain committed to combating priority crimes, including drug-related offences, across the district. The successful operation underscores their dedication to community safety and crime prevention.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement, contributing to a safer Northern Cape for all.
