A 27-YEAR-old Wrenchville man was sentenced to 12 months in prison after he contravened a protection order taken out against him by his mother and stole R200 for her.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the incident took place on November 7, 2023, in Promiseland, Wrenchville, when the son, who was residing in the same yard as his 58-year-old mother, forcefully entered her home.

The mother had initially refused to open the door when he knocked. In response, the son verbally abused her.

Later that day, the son returned and forcibly entered the house. The mother’s handbag, containing R600, was on the sofa. However, she discovered it missing after the intrusion. Suspecting her son, she confronted him at his shanty. She retrieved the bag but found R200 missing.

The mother had a protection order against her son and a case was opened at the local police station, resulting in his arrest.

The Kuruman Regional Court subsequently sentenced him to 12 months direct imprisonment and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The SAPS management praised Detective Sergeant Jamine Melissa Armstrong of the Kuruman Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for her diligent work in securing the conviction.

Sergeant Shemane reaffirmed the Northern Cape police’s commitment to protecting older persons and upholding their rights within the community.
