THE KURUMAN Regional Court recently handed down a 20-year prison sentence to a 41-year-old man convicted of raping a 39-year-old woman in Wrenchville.
The incident took place on July 27, 2023.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the victim had recently ended her relationship with the accused, Moses Leck Leier. She obtained a protection order against him, seeking legal protection. However, Leier disregarded the order.
Leier went to the victim’s home, where he threatened her with a chain. He then forcibly took her to his own residence, where he raped her. The woman reported the incident to the police, leading to Leier’s swift arrest the following day.
The court sentenced Leier to 20 years imprisonment for the rape. Five years of the sentence was suspended for five years on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence during the period of suspension.
Additionally, Leier was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The investigation was led by Detective Sergeant Keitshwaretswe Tshikedi from the Kuruman SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit. Her diligent investigation and hard work ensured justice for the victim and sent a strong message against sexual violence in the community.
