Young model raising funds for her big dreams

THIRTEEN-year-old Irisang Domingo, a talented local model, is gearing up to host her second annual beauty pageant, Mr and Miss Denim Fever, with the aim of raising funds for her participation in the prestigious 2024 International Teen Supermodel SA competition.

The event promises to be a dazzling affair, combining fashion, entertainment and philanthropy.

Irisang’s journey to the international stage has been marked by determination and hard work. With the 2024 International Teen Supermodel SA finals scheduled for September 27 and 28, she is leaving no stone unturned. The Denim Fever pageant serves as a rallying point, bringing together the community to support her aspirations.

Irisang’s passion and commitment have already been demonstrated when she hosted the first Denim Fever pageant at the Evangelizing United Church in Phutanang back in June 2023. The event garnered praise and witnessed collaboration with various modelling agencies.

According to the Tshiamo Primary School learner, this year’s Denim Fever promises to be even grander. More models have registered and excitement is building. As part of the entertainment line-up, a brass band will add rhythm and flair to the proceedings. Attendees can expect a fusion of style, talent and community spirit.

Irisang is looking forward to the 2024 International Teen Supermodel SA finals, considering it a momentous and highly competitive event.

Initially, about 70 models qualified for the race to the finals. However, the competition is fierce, and eliminations are ongoing through a rigorous voting process.

Irisang and her mother, with unwavering determination, have been humbly seeking donations at the intersection near Virgin Active. Their efforts, though commendable, currently cover only the SMS voting line, which Irisang must persistently promote to secure her place among the finalists.

The leaderboard is updated every fortnight, and Irisang’s excitement is palpable as she proudly holds the second position among 20 finalists.

As the competition intensifies, Irisang has humbly appealed to anyone who can assist with donations and sponsorships. Every contribution counts, and the community’s support will propel her closer to her dream of representing South Africa on the global stage.

“I am in a good space to compete … I stand a chance,” says Irisang of the 2024 International Teen Supermodel SA finals. “The winner will go on an all-expenses trip to participate at an international level of the pageant overseas,” she adds proudly.

“I am still safe for the next two weeks. All I need is to work harder.”

Irisang appealed to the public, urging them to cast their votes for her to secure her position among the finalists.

Irisang’s biggest cheerleader is her mother, Cathy. She has been actively involved in hosting another beauty pageant, Miss Phutanang, to help raise funds to propel Irisang toward her dream of becoming a model.

While the financial gains from their events may not be substantial, Cathy emphasises that every effort counts. There is a gap to fill - a space where dreams take root and flourish. For Irisang, this journey is more than just runway lights; it’s about resilience, ambition and community.

Cathy’s motivation extends beyond the glitz and glamour. She recognises that these competitions serve a vital purpose: keeping the youth off the streets. By channelling their energy and aspirations into the world of fashion and beauty, young talents like Irisang find a positive outlet

As a domestic worker, Cathy understands the challenges her daughter faces. The costs associated with competitions - entry fees, attire, travel - can be daunting. Despite the financial strain, she stands firmly by her daughter’s side, supporting her dreams with unwavering love.

Cathy candidly shares, “Being a domestic worker and single parent, I only get paid for working three days a week. I suggested that she pull out of the race, but she continues to beg me to wait until she becomes Miss South Africa.”

“This is a difficult journey, but I’m willing to support my daughter’s dream in every way. Each and every cent we make from seeking donations at intersections goes into her current hustle to one day reach an international platform.”

“The Northern Cape is a challenging province in terms of getting sponsorship, but we soldier on.

“At least we get support from Irisang’s school, Tshiamo Primary. They sometimes assist with vouchers to help support her journey.”

Cathy knows that every sacrifice, every cent counts.
