AS PART of the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha and with the aim of alleviating hunger, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Awqaf SA, in partnership with Diyanet, the religious body of Türkiye, will this coming week hand over hygiene and meat packs to NGOs in Kimberley.
The project manager of Awqaf SA, Hasanain Abdullah, said this will be the first donation that will be made to local organisations in Kimberley.
“We will be making the donations to the Kimberley Muslim Senior Citizens and Galeshewe Senior Citizens. There will also be a dinner hosted for dignitaries to raise funds at the Kimberley Club Boutique Hotel. We decided to reach out to organisations in Kimberley as they lack assistance from international sponsors. Most sponsors only focus on bigger cities and metropolitan areas. This will be the first of what we envision to be a continuous relationship with the organisations,” said Abdullah.
He added that they hoped to assist thousands of organisations across the country.
“This year, Awqaf SA and its partners have sacrificed up to 120 tonnes of meat, involving over 600 animals, targeting close to 200,000 people directly. This year, members of the Imam Development Programme, a venture supported by Awqaf SA and Mercy Mission South Africa, will assist with the logistics of delivering the meat packs in South Africa. The programme aims to develop dynamic and inspirational imams in communities across the country,” said Abdullah.
He said they hoped that the donation will ease the burden of food shortages for the local organisations during the cold winter months.
